How Shaw Industries made the cut

As one of the nation’s largest private fleet operators, Shaw Industries drivers are experts in delivering carpet, laminate, tile and stone, synthetic turf and other specialty products to the residential and commercial markets.

The company’s 2022 Shipper of Choice award marks a consecutive win.

“Shaw’s logistics and supply chain strategies are focused on our customer, because their success drives our success,” Kevin O’Meara, Shaw’s vice president of integrated supply chain, told FreightWaves. “We are honored to be named a shipper of choice for two years in a row. This win is a testament to our Shaw associates, who ensure our customers have the support they need to do business every day.”

O’Meara said the majority of Shaw’s network offers drop and hook loads with 24/7 door access so trucks can quickly and efficiently serve the company’s business.

“We have incredible logistics partners who work with us to ensure there are no delays or disruptions in our supply chain. Their valuable partnerships help us create solutions and innovations not only for our customers but also for the engines we work with.”

The company’s support of its drivers has resulted in high driver retention rates. The company offers comprehensive reward packages that focus on the health and well-being of employees.

“For our drivers specifically, we offer flexibility and other benefits that make it easier to be on the road,” O’Meara said. “We allow our teams of road drivers to bring their dogs in the trucks with them, which has been a huge success.”

Shaw has started quarterly driver appreciation meals at its distribution centers around the country that allow drivers to connect with each other “and feel even more valued for all their hard work,” according to O’Meara. “We also offer quarterly safety bonuses to further drive home the importance of safety and compliance.”

To build that support structure, O’Meara noted that the company recently created what it calls the Shaw Driver Finishing Program. New driver graduates who have obtained a Class A CDL are needed and placed in Shaw’s 12-week training program designed to bring them up to Shaw’s driving level.

“So far, the pilot has been very successful and we look forward to rolling it out to our distribution centers across the country.”

This year’s Shipper of Choice award winners were chosen from nearly 400 companies nominated by FreightWaves readers on social media.

Shipper of Choice candidates completed a survey that addressed operational data, including dwell times, overages/shortages and damage, hours of operation, communication protocols, and facility attributes including availability of showers, restrooms and rest rooms for drivers.
