Apple iOS 16

Apple recently announced the latest iPhone software, iOS 16, during the developer conference. The new lock screen customization options suggest that at least one of this year’s new iPhones will have a feature that Android phones have had for years: always-on display.

Apple’s iOS 16 software, which is in beta and will be released to everyone this fall, allows you to add all kinds of things to the lock screen. So, you can quickly check the status, battery status of your AirPods, upcoming calendar events and more. On the current iPhone, though, you still have to press the power button to turn on the screen.

But, if Apple adds always-on display to its next iPhone, it will allow you to view your new lock screen on your phone while it’s sitting on your desktop. This is something that Samsung, Google and other Android phone manufacturers have included over the years. Apple has been reluctant to add this option, perhaps instead of focusing on battery life. The display can always drain the battery slowly, even if the screen is very dark.

This is the always-on display mode, which lowers the screen to save battery life.

The Apple Watch Series 5 and newer models offer an always-on display, and they work well. On the clock, you can look down and see the time, temperature, and other applications, such as a map, even when the screen is not full, or bright. It sits in the dark so you can still use the watch without having to turn your wrist to wake it up.

A new iPhone can do the same thing, showing the important information you choose to put on the lock screen, without requiring you to wake up the phone to full brightness.

Bloomberg says it’s a brand Apple is already planning to add to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the high-end models expected this fall. This means it may not be available on the regular iPhone 14. But it may be a good enough sign that people will want to spend more on the Pro model.
