Canelo Alvarez ended one of boxing’s greatest rivalries of this generation with a unanimous decision victory over Gennady Golovkin in his trilogy fight to retain his undisputed bantamweight championship.

But the win wasn’t enough for Alvarez to move up in ESPN’s pound-for-pound rankings. Most of our panelists decided to keep Alvarez in the same spot, while others moved him down the list, arguing that he doesn’t look good enough against a much older and slower opponent.

ESPN boxing writer Mike Coppinger said, “I kept Canelo at No. 5 on my list because while he clearly beat GGG, he came in on the low end and it was a far from impressive performance.” “Alvarez said he needs surgery to repair his left hand, the hand with which he throws his signature left hook. That could help explain this trip, and he’ll have a chance to regain the top spot next year if he meets Dmitri fight. Bivol will either fight David Benavidez.”

Boxing analyst Bernardo Pilatti, a well-known critic of Alvarez, dropped Canelo completely from his top ten.

Pilatti said: “I already had Canelo number 7 on my list before the fight and after what I thought was a poor match against Golovkin, I decided to put him in my top 10 regardless of the result. do not include.” “Furthermore, Canelo was committed to winning with the authority of the champion and the younger fighter, putting on a show and, as he promised, knocking GGG out and retiring him. And he did none of that.”
