Surrey, BC – British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating a fatal shooting involving an officer in Campbell River.

RCMP information indicates that at approximately 1:45 a.m. on June 13, 2022, police responded to a suspected homicide report with potential hostages at a marina. Officers, including members of the Emergency Response Team, attended the marina and reportedly determined there were no hostages left.

Police are reported to have spoken to the man who was the subject of the initial police call who allegedly had a weapon. Shots were fired and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and IIO investigators were deployed to Campbell River.

The IIO is British Columbia’s independent civilian police oversight body. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious injury or death, whether or not there are allegations of wrongdoing.
