Apple’s iPhone 14 range offers the first controversy: it is the first iPhone range to be released with a different chipset. Many people believe that this is an offshoot, the result of a global shortage of chips, but the first drop of the iPhone 15 has a shock in the store.

Yes, the iPhone 14 is only a week old, but Apple is working years ahead, and a new report from Nikkei Asia suggests that the company has already decided to limit the next A17 chip to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max . . And this is more important than it did for the iPhone 14 lineup.

While the performance differences between the A15 and A16 are small, both chips are head and shoulders above the competition, making the differences insignificant. The real downside is that there is no significant improvement in battery life from the A16, but that seems to have been fixed with the A17.

According to Nikkei, the A17 will be Apple’s first 3-nanometer chip after the 5nm variant was used for the A14, A15 and A16. This is bleeding edge technology and, compared to its predecessors, 3nm allows the A17 to run faster, cooler and with reduced red light. Yes, this is shaping up to be the first chip in four years that offers significant annual performance and battery life gains – but only for Pro buyers.

“Apple may have used different levels of production technology to introduce greater differences between its premium and premium products,” said Dylan Patel, senior analyst with Semianalysis, speaking to Nikkei.

With the X60 and X65 offering a solid design, the X70 is now a lock for the iPhone 15 range. Also, the combination of the X70 and the 3nm A17 chip shows this range has the potential to deliver game-changing battery life.
