The original iPhone, 2007
“The iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other smartphone”. This is how Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone to the world in 2007. It’s not exactly magical, but the iPhone has revolutionized the mobile phone industry ever since. The Apple iPhone has a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a 2MP rear camera. The announcement of the first iPhone said, “iPhone Offers Up to Eight Hours of Talk Time”, so the battery was one of the main features of this phone.
The first iPhone came with 15 apps pre-installed: Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, iPod, Maps (Google Maps), Messages, Notes, Phone, Photos, Safari, Stocks, Voice Memos, Weather and Settings. And no, you can’t download any third-party apps on iPhone. You can’t record video on this phone! The iPhone offers up to 16 GB of RAM and 128 MB of internal storage. It is 11.6mm in thickness and 135gm in weight.
The original iPhone never made its way to India. It has been launched for $499 (approximately Rs 37,000) in the US.
The first iPhone to come to India, iPhone 3G, 2008
The second generation iPhone is the first iPhone to make its way to Indian shores. In terms of specifications, there are no major updates, but one of the main features of this smartphone is the App Store. Yes, this is the first mobile phone to have an App Store. Apple has also introduced 3G connectivity in this iPhone.
The 8GB RAM variant has been launched at Rs 31,000 and the 16 GB RAM variant has been priced at Rs 36,100 in India.
iPhone 3GS, 2009
While the display size remains 3.5-inch in the iPhone 3GS, Apple has increased the camera resolution to 3-megapixel and RAM to 32GB in this phone. The iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone to come with video recording support. Although Siri was not introduced in 2009, Apple added support for voice control in the iPhone 3GS.
The Apple iPhone 3GS has been launched at a starting price of Rs 35,500 (16GB).
Hear you, Hear you, the first iPhone with a selfie camera: iPhone 4, 2010
The Apple iPhone 4 was the first iPhone to feature a front-facing camera. Apart from this, Apple has also added Retina display in this. The iPhone got slimmer and has a rear camera with 5 megapixels. In terms of storage, the internal storage has been bumped up to 512MB from 256MB in the iPhone 4. This is where iPhone features and details start to look more futuristic.

Apple introduced the Siri voice assistant for the first time in the iPhone 4S. While this in itself is a great USP for iPhone 4S, but Apple did not stop there, it improved the camera resolution from 5-megapixel to 8-megapixel and added 64GB RAM option. This iPhone comes with support for 1080p video recording. Apple recorded sales of four million units of the iPhone 4S in the first week of its launch.

Apple saw another record sale of 9 million iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C units in the first week of sale. While the iPhone 5C is cheaper than the other as it comes with a plastic body. The more expensive iPhone 5s is the first iPhone to come with the Touch ID feature. It also comes with dual flash support and slow motion video. The iPhone 5C comes in different color options for the first time it was launched in red, yellow, blue, white and green.

Apple’s iPhone 6 series includes the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. With this series, Apple increased the screen size to 5.5-inch, camera resolution to 12-megapixel, and memory to 2GB. Apple also introduced 3D touch for iPhone in this series. Still, Apple has witnessed the highest sales of 13 million units in the first week of sale with the iPhone 6 series.
Affordable iPhone: Apple iPhone SE, 2016
The iPhone SE is basically the iPhone 6s internals in a smaller body, minus the 3D touch. This is a low-cost iPhone aimed at buyers who want an affordable iPhone for a change.
It was sold for Rs 39,000 in India.
Apple iPhone 7 series, 2016-17
With the Apple iPhone 7 series, Apple has launched 16GB and 32GB base variants for both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus respectively. The Plus variant even features a dual rear camera for the first time. The camera comes with new features like Portrait Mode. One big thing that Apple has done this time is to remove the headphone jack. This is the launch event where the company introduced the first wireless headphones called AirPods, thus the solution to the lost speaker ass.
Apple iPhone 8 series, 2017-18
Apple iPhone 8 series includes iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. These two iPhones come with a glass back and support for wireless charging. The camera has also been updated with new editing features. This iPhone series also has no headphone jack so, Apple users have realized that they have to start using wireless headphones to continue using the iPhone.
Apple iPhone X series, 2018-19
Skipping iPhone 9, Apple introduced the iPhone X series which includes iPhone X, iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. In addition to selfies with Portrait mode, Super Retina HD edge-to-edge display, to the A13 Bionic chip, the iPhone X series comes in six color options: Red, Yellow, White, Blue, Black and Orange.
Apple iPhone 11 series, 2019
The flagships of the Apple iPhone 11 series, which include the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11, come with a triple rear camera setup. This camera setup includes a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. The iPhone 11 Pro Max model also has a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display.
Apple iPhone SE, 2020
Apple introduced the second generation of the affordable iPhone SE in 2020. It brought back the 4.7-inch Retina HD display, the home button and Touch ID. This iPhone is powered by the A13 Bionic chipset, a chip used in expensive products. The iPhone SE comes with Portrait mode, crisp video, wireless charging capability and long battery life.

Apple introduced the iPhone 12 series which includes iPhone 12 mini, iPhone, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020. The iPhone is bigger with a 6.7 inch display. According to the company, iPhone 12 Pro Max offers 87 percent better low light camera and 5X zoom. This is closer to professional photography.
Apple iPhone 13 series, 2021
In the Apple iPhone 13 series, which includes the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple introduced up to 1 TB of storage and the A15 Bionic chipset. Apple claims that the iPhone 13 Pro Max can provide up to 28 hours of non-stop video playback. These models also come with a low-grade, cinematic mode for better photography. These models are made almost identical to the iPhone 12 series.
New: Apple 14 series, 2022
The iPhone 14 series includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The four models come with satellite connection support (to be available in the US and Canada first) and crash detection. Additionally, the biggest design change offered by the company is the power island that is available in the Pro models.
