The first iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro leaks claim that Apple will make major design changes in 2023. And now, to insult the biggest, the company has no choice.

In an industry-changing move, the European Parliament has voted to approve a new law requiring all electronic devices to use the USB-C port by the end of 2024. And together and rivals who have already climbed, the main target of the law is Apple. the AirPods and iPhone series.

“By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port,” the European Council said in a press release. “From the summer of 2026, the obligation will extend to computers. The new law, which was approved on Tuesday by the House of Representatives with 602 votes in favor, 13 against and 8, is part of the efforts of the EU It’s about reducing online waste and empowering consumers to make sustainable choices.”

The new law also applies to headphones, earphones, headsets, handheld video games, handheld speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, and portable navigation systems with power delivery. electricity up to 100 watts. The exception is wearables – smartwatches and fitness trackers – which are considered too small to need a port.

So the Apple Watch escaped, but Apple’s two main series didn’t. Ironically, Apple has previously justified the continued use of Lightning on the environment, claiming that it will reduce “the introduction of useful innovations in charging systems, including those related to safety and energy efficiency.”

The vote of the European Parliament shows that few people are happy with this argument.

Apple still has the option to hold Lightning stations outside the European Union. But the financial benefits of the port will likely be outweighed by the complexity of production division it will bring to Apple’s supply chain. Also, some countries seem to follow the example of the Council of Europe.

So when can we expect the first USB-C iPhones? The rumor is already confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra models will already receive the port in 2023. And where iPhones go, AirPods follow.

Either way, the Lightning’s days are numbered. So if you are thinking of buying a new iPhone or AirPods, think carefully about whether you want a device with a dedicated port. Then again, if you’re just holding out hope for Touch ID to come back, don’t worry.
