There are some who still consider Canelo Alvarez at the top of the boxing food chain.

Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin completed their trilogy in September with the former winning by unanimous decision, winning two of the three fights.

Alvarez was in control for most of the contest until GGG landed a late takedown that was too little, too late to close the final count. Watching the fight at home with his family and relaxing after a day of training, WBC interim middleweight Sebastian Fundora was unfazed by the action inside the ring.

“My dad and I joked that it was more of a retirement plan,” Fundara, who faces Carlos Ocampo on Saturday, recently told DAZN. “But we’ll see what Gennady has in store for himself. I didn’t expect it from him, but it is what it is. And Canelo didn’t look very sharp either. I think it was just a sparring match. A sparring match. But that’s what it is. Not everyone is going to be at their best every day.”

The win was Canelo’s first since losing to WBA lightweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May. Although he bounced back with a wide victory over his archrival, many believe Alvarez has regained his place at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. Don’t count Fondora among the recalcitrants.

“He just had an off day,” Fundara said. “That’s all. I’m not really talking about his wrestling game because I still think he’s pound for pound.”

In his last fight, Fundara (19-0-1, 13 KOs) stopped Erickson Lubin in one of the best fights of 2022 to win the interim belt. Ocampo went on a 12-fight winning streak to earn a shot at the 154-pound world title in June 2018 when he was knocked out in the first round by three-time heavyweight champion Errol Spence Jr. By all accounts, Fundara should win easily as she has all the advantages on paper. None of this matters to Fundara because Ocampo has his undivided attention.

“Look at the last guy. He had six wins,” Fundara said. “Carlos Ocampo has a 12-fight streak. Why don’t they push him like that? Just because he’s not as highly ranked as he could be. This guy is another dangerous opponent, another ranked fighter, and we’re just rooting for him. best preparation.”
