Legendary boxing trainer Johnny Lewis has challenged Nikita Tszyu to “play chess” against Darkon Dryden as part of an all-day boxing festival at Newcastle Leisure Center on Saturday.
Tszyu is coming off a unanimous decision win over Ben Horn, Jeff’s brother, in a fight most boxing insiders expected him to prevail. Instead, he repeatedly staggered and pushed the distance. Some argue that Tzu disrespected Horn by holding his head up and striking with his opponent.
Tszyu had to undergo ear surgery in the days leading up to the fight and admitted he wasn’t in the best shape for the fight, but didn’t want to take anything away from Horn.

Days out from Tzu’s fight with Dryden, Lewis told The Sydney Morning Herald the young star needed a different approach to the fight.
“You hope they learn every fight and I’m sure he learned a lot from that fight,” Lewis said.
“He didn’t lose it, but there was a moment when he was a little worried.
“The truth of the matter is that he won the fight well and I think he learned a lot from it.
“Even good boxers can’t [end all fights quickly].
“They have to find a way to get a good shot, you have to play chess.
“That’s one thing he could learn from. I still look at him as a boxer and he’ll get back on track in time.
“If the knockout presents itself, I’m sure he’ll do it.”
The Tszu-Darken fight will take place on a card with 20 fights over 10 hours, with the likes of Dennis Hogan and Sam Eggington fighting for the IBO super welterweight title, Sam Goodman putting his unbeaten record on the line against Jason Cooper and Paulo. Aokuso with Faris Chevalier.
